When I went to see Martha Beck and Liz Gilbert live in Arizona last year I learned a technique that has changed my life. Srsly.
And it’s so simple!
Is there a part of you that’s missing from your life?
Maybe your delight?
Or your creativity?
Or maybe there’s a thing you want in your life and it remains elusive despite all your hard work.
Like money or success.
Try this:
Write a letter to that elusive part of you/elusive thing.
Literally start: “Dear Delight,”. And then tell it how bothered you are by its absence. And go to the good side, too, tell it how much you’ve appreciated it in the past. What has it enabled in your life? Tell it about it.
And then, ask it to tell you why it’s been so elusive and what you need to do to invite it back into your life.
And then, switch hands.
Write a letter FROM the elusive part of yourself TO you.
A fascinating thing happens once you switch hands. The elusive part starts to TELL YOU why it’s stayed away.
- Your delight tells you why it only pokes its head out at Christmastime.
- Success tells you how your must-have-it grip is choking it to death
- Money tells you how your attitude towards wealthy people makes it worried about your judgment.
- And your creativity tells the story of its last visit a decade ago when everyone joked away your big idea.
This is not a drill, people. This works!
The elusiveness will speak.
Writing these two letters will get you insight that you just can’t drum up on your own. That insight might be exactly what you need to do to allow more of the elusiveness into your life.
What’s elusive in your life right now? Write a letter to that part of you and let it write a letter to you in return.
You. Will. Be. Amazed.
Big love,
Jen
