Ever had a rumination just take over your mind? Some kind of worry that you played over and over again until you were shaking with anxiety?
I had a major fixation when I started my business. It went like this:
I need $X income to keep things stable.
This is Y# of clients at $Z rate.
By this particular date.
Or else….Or else….OR ELSE!!
Then I’d go nuts thinking of impending disasters. And while it’s strategically wise to plan like this, I was actually hard-wiring disaster into my brain. The neural networks associated with things going poorly were becoming more efficient, practiced. Plus it’s just plain-old, bad juju to rehearse doom!
It’s better to practice delight.
When your mind spirals anxiously like this, a great solution is to shift your focus to the outcome that you want instead. Then practice the feelings of having that outcome.
So, in my own example, what would it feel like to “keep things stable” as I started my business? For me, those feelings are ease, flow, full engagement, alignment, service, and let’s-get-real: RELIEF! All these feelings combined evoke delight. Much better juju!
The next step is to practice those feelings.
You do this by visualizing achieving the solution and evoking the powerful, positive feelings associated with this. Make a movie in your mind and inhabit it. Let your brain rehearse things going well!
When you practice the positive sensations associated with the solution to the problem, instead of rehearsing the problem itself, you create new neural pathways that prepare you to more easily experience the solution. And the delight. 🙂
I’m hosting a free webinar next week on how to handle fears.
Learn the best techniques to combat doubt and fear so they don’t derail you from creating that life you really want. The live event is August 7th at 10am EDT.
