I am detoxing from social media…for 400 days!
Ok, some context. Back in November, I started a 40-day social media detox. No logging into my Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn accounts for 40 days. I didn’t think it would be a huge stretch for me, since, as I usually say, “I barely use social media, anyway.” Flips hair.
But! It was hard. Really hard. I had a bad case of FOMO on the daily. I wondered constantly what people were up to. I worried about missing business connections, party invites, and depriving the world of the cuteness that is my two kidlets. At Christmas time. In fancy shoes. Singing festive songs. With actions.
But it was also very, very good.
Unsurprisingly, my productivity skyrocketed. I connected deeper and more frequently with people in person. Oh hey! You’re taller than I remember.
I did the things I’d been putting off for ages.
Like getting my accounting in tip-top shape, readings books that were stacked on my nightstand, meeting new people, baking cookies with my kids.
And I generally felt uplifted. So I’m giving it a longer go.
For the rest of 2019, I will be incommunicado via social media.
It’s bringing up a serious kind of anxiety. That almost-good kind because you know it means there’s junk to clear out. And stuff to face.
‘Cause if I’m not on Facebook, who’s gonna tell me that Susan Boyle has returned, sang Wild Horses (welp!) and got the golden buzzer?
Or how will I ever find out about HIGHlarious memes like this? Because what is life about if it’s not laughing at this 1000 times?
And how will I properly cyber scope a potential date if I’m not on social media? I neeeeed to see photos. How else would I know he’s not a serial killer?
So, you see, SERIOUS PROBLEMS.
But really, the serious thing is the feeling. The very real threat of emptiness. Of disconnection. It’s a frightening, creeping feeling.
So far the solution is to ask:
How do I really want to spend the hours of my life?
And those answers always seem to bring deeper connections and more fullness. They’re just harder to get started at.
Are you doing any kind of detox for the new year? Could you benefit from taking a break from something? What could you do with all that new space?
And if 2019 is the year you really want to take flight with your wild dreams, then creating space for those dreams is absolutely vital. I can help you clear the runway for your amazing future. If you want me to be your coach, let’s chat about it. I’ll help you navigate the improbabilities, pressure, and freakiness of it all. And you’ll make the kind of bold, brave progress that’s impossible without the right support.
Here’s to your brilliant 2019.
Big love,
Jen
