I went to a conference a while back and my mind was blown by what this billionaire said. His words were permission to be completely clueless AND reap benefits from it.
Naveen Jain is a billionaire and philanthropist. His company was the first private company to be granted access to fly to the moon and he recently took a company from $0 to $100 million in the healthcare industry, a field he knew nothing about. He declared:
The only way to disrupt an industry is to know NOTHING about it.
Only then do you have fresh enough eyes to challenge the foundation of everything that everyone there has taken for granted. He said experts can only ever add 10% to any given field. But a rookie, a rookie can change everything.
Bam! Permission to be a head-scratching dope!
So if you’ve just begun a whole foods nutrition course and your mind’s abuzz with ways to spin it into a business, you’re probably also choked up with all the ways you’re So Behind. And way too New.
Great! You’re in THE BEST position to make breakthroughs. Plus you’re CLOSER to how your clients feel In The Real World than anyone who’s been practicing for decades and lost touch.
In Buddhist psychology, this is called Beginner’s Mind. It’s about looking at the world with childlike wonder. About coming at experiences as if they’re all brand new.
The entire world opens up to you from this space.
Possibility, presence, delight, breakthroughs.
Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield says that Beginner’s Mind gives us the wisdom of uncertainty which frees us from the thicket of views and opinions.
