How do you know if your dream will be worth it?

It’s one thing to find that thing you love doing, that thing you want to do so much you’re considering quitting your day job and setting up shop.  It’s another thing entirely about whether you can make a living from your dream.  

What are the economics of your dream?

Life coaches and business mentors don’t talk about this enough:  Not all dreams are fit to be full-time jobs. Not all callings will pay the bills.

That’s not really the point of a deep-hearted calling.  A calling is the expression of your truest self. It’s breathing into the world that thing that only you can do since you are a unique, unrepeatable event in the history of humankind.

Like Tara Mohr says: 

“Your calling will never demand that it be the way you pay your mortgage.”

But…it could.

So how do you know if it will?

There’s a certain amount of due diligence necessary.

One integral piece is what I call the Expert’s Journey.  

You’ve got to speak to people who’ve gone before you, doing what you aim to do.

Your one goal is to paint a realistic picture of what it’s like to start out, and what it’s like in the longer term.

Some good questions to ask someone who’s gone before you would be:

• What training did you do upfront?
• How did you get your first clients?
• How long did it take to become profitable? To make a living? (get #s!)
• What was the impact on your lifestyle in the beginning? (get specific!)
• What were your biggest challenges?
• What would you do differently if you could do it all again?
• Can you recommend someone else for me to speak to with these same questions?

You need to know, in vivid detail, the full impact of your new dream – quantitatively and qualitatively.

Every dream sucks some of the time.  

Become intimately familiar with the ways your dream might totally suck as a job.  And then see if that’s worth the upside.
